Hello World! is a mastodon community for Public Interest Tech folks, Civic Tech people, Govpunks, and other civillian government folks!

And it will be opening very soon!

You can head over to our website and JOIN the list to be added!

@krusynth can I publicize this to the PIT mailing list I'm on?

@krusynth thank you and everyone who is helping out for putting this together.

@krusynth This sounds exciting! I’m trying to better understand the community you envision. I work for a state government agency, lead a team of data techs, and participate in a multitude of cross-work unit teams whose responsibilities run the spectrum of data collection, storage, warehousing, and reporting (access-controlled and public-facing). Also active in open data standards orgs. Is that part of the community you want to build?

@rpp9999 Yeah, that sounds right! I think we're trying to be deliberately vague so folks can self-select in if it sounds interesting!

Most of the folks who've shown interest so far are city/state/fed employees/adjacent who work in govtech of one sort or another. Also a bunch of folks from foundations & educational orgs.

Basically, anyone who wants to talk about how to make government work better is someone I want to talk to!

@krusynth I’ll have a look at the community page - might just be what I’m looking for. Echoing others here - thanks for setting this up!

@krusynth sorry, this might be a silly question, but how do I just follow the server? Or can I? Or do I follow the people individually on the server? Or can I join the server but stay based on my home Typetura server?

I feel like being able to follow whole servers would be a cool feature, since so many servers are organized around interests, like Public Interest or Watercolor Painting or whatever, but I don’t think that’s how it works, right?

@Anatecture afaik following servers is not a thing.

Also, this is running @darius ’s Hometown fork, so you only get full access to the local chat if you’re on the server.

But also you can totally have multiple accounts for different communities that you’re a part of - that’s part of the fediverse pattern! @darius ah thanks! That’s good to know!

Now I just have to figure out if maintaining multiple accounts is a feature of my brain…

Just out the ID of the person(s) you want to follow in your local server search box, then click the follow button next to their profile when it displays.

@Anatecture @krusynth agree! There are many instances I would love to get up on my timeline.

@danielschuman Yup - I can't migrate accounts until the 30 day lock on this account expires.

@danielschuman Thanks! Well, if you wanna join there are a lot of options on the signup form of things you can volunteer for! If you have the time and interest and energy. Otherwise just spread the good word, please! <3

@krusynth I’ll definitely spread the word! The rest has to wait until I see a bit better.

@krusynth this is interesting, but will it be US-centric or global?

@bc_ez Global! There are a lot of UK/CA/TW/NZ gov folks in my circles, but open to anyone. Though English is still likely to be the primary language on this instance.

@krusynth I'm not sure I quite fit the desired community profile, but I do find it very cool that you created this 😊

@krusynth the Force seems strong with this one. Is this town for me?
